Women on the Job Asks: 'Where Are the Women?'
May 8, 2001; Long Island, NY: Seventeen of Long Island’s top 100 public companies were recognized on May 8 for having a woman on their boards of directors by Women on the Job, (WOJ) the Port Washington based organization which has promoted equal opportunity for women in the workplace for the past twenty years, announced Lillian McCormick, WOJ Executive Director.
"This is the first attempt on Long Island, and maybe the nation, that a local organization has mounted such a successful awareness campaign about women on corporate boards, " according to Kathy Adams of Adams and Jaskot, LLP, who chairs the steering committee of WOJ’s Where Are the Women project.
Over four hundred guests at the Crest Hollow Country Club Gala Luncheon applauded the honored corporations which include: Avis, Keyspan, Henry Schein, Interstate National Dealers Association, Pall Corporation, Cablevision, and Computer Associates.
"I’m thrilled with the turnout, but not surprised," said Where Are the Women Advisory Council chair, Jeff Bass, a principal of Margolin, Winer and Evens. "The Long Island business community is much more enlightened than most in the metropolitan area."
In his remarks Bass noted the tremendous advancements women had made in the corporate community in this decade and encouraged them to enlarge the room under the "glass ceiling," by expanding their entrepreneurial roles.
John Kominicki of LI Business News and member of the Where Are the Women Advisory Council, and Marie Zere of Zere Real Estate Services co-hosted the "Get on Board" Gala Luncheon.
According to WOJ President, Dana Friedman, "this project seeks the cooperation of business, civic, professional and academic leaders in the search for solutions. Today’s purpose was raising awareness; we hope this will increase opportunities for women to become corporate officers and directors."
Lisa Benenson, editor-in-chief of "Working Woman" and "Working Mother" gave the keynote address.
Copies of "Be Your Own Mentor" by Sheila Wellington, President of Catalyst, the nationally respected organization that has been tracking women’s workplace progress since 1977, were distributed. Dr. Shirley Strum Kenney, SUNY Stony Brook President and board member of both Computer Associates and Toys R Us and Joanne Guerin, Vice President, Human Resources, JP Morgan Chase, spoke on the importance of issue.
Event organizers thanked the supporting luncheon sponsors: JP Morgan Chase, Computer Associates, Keyspan, EAB, Treiber Insurance, Avis, Strategic Personnel, LI Commercial Bank, B. Litrell Communications, Citibank; Rivkin, Radler, Kremer; the Law Offices of Vicki Gruber and Hofstra University, locus of the original study WOJ commissioned to examine Long Island corporations.
